Drug intelligence / Profile preview
sodium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium acetate + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic balanced electrolyte solution used primarily as **Multiple Electrolytes Injection, Type 1, USP** and as an irrigating solution. It is an isotonic small-molecule electrolyte formulation that provides sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate ions for intravascular and extracellular fluid replacement. Its pharmacologic effect is restoration and maintenance of water and electrolyte balance, while acetate and gluconate act as metabolizable anions with alkalinizing effects that help buffer metabolic acidosis. Marketed products that contain this exact five-salt combination include **Plasma-Lyte A**, **Isolyte S**, and **Physiolyte**. The drug is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes, for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, as an alkalinizing agent, and in some product presentations for general irrigation, rinsing, and washing.
