Drug intelligence / Profile preview
sodium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium gluconate + potassium chloride is a **multi-electrolyte crystalloid intravenous solution** intended to provide water and physiologic electrolytes for hydration and correction of fluid and electrolyte deficits. It is best understood as a **specific ingredient subset** found within balanced electrolyte solutions related to the Plasma-Lyte family, but the exact four-ingredient name does **not uniquely identify a single marketed Baxter product label** because publicly available Baxter and DailyMed labels for Multiple Electrolytes Injection, Type 1, USP and PLASMA-LYTE A/148 also include **sodium acetate** in addition to these four components. Mechanistically, this combination has no single discrete receptor or enzyme target; it acts by expanding the extracellular fluid compartment, replenishing sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride, and providing an alkalinizing buffer contribution through metabolism of gluconate. Clinically, such balanced electrolyte solutions are used as a source of water and electrolytes and as an alkalinizing agent, with related products also used for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance management and, in some formulations, irrigation or rinsing applications.
