Overview

Sodium chloride + phenol (aqueous phenol) is a neurolytic solution used primarily for the management of severe spasticity and chronic pain. Phenol acts as a chemical neurolytic agent that induces non-selective protein denaturation and subsequent Wallerian degeneration of nerve fibers when injected in close proximity to nerves or motor points. This process leads to a long-lasting but typically reversible interruption of nerve conduction, effectively reducing muscle tone in conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or spinal cord injury. The saline component serves as a sterile vehicle for the phenol, which is typically used at concentrations ranging from 3% to 7% for neurolytic procedures.
