A sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic balanced crystalloid combination of sodium chloride, sodium acetate, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium gluconate used primarily as an intravenous fluid and also, in some presentations, as an irrigating solution. The product is marketed under brands including Plasma-Lyte A and Physiolyte and is associated with Baxter and B. Braun Medical. It acts by replacing water and physiologically balanced electrolytes while acetate and gluconate serve as bicarbonate precursors that provide an alkalinizing effect after metabolism. The solution is used for hydration, correction of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and as an alkalinizing agent, with irrigant use for general washing, rinsing, and irrigation depending on the specific product presentation.
