Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium chloride + sodium gluconate + sodium acetate + potassium chloride + magnesium chloride is a **balanced isotonic intravenous crystalloid solution** used for parenteral replacement of extracellular fluid and electrolytes. Marketed in formulations including Plasma-Lyte A, Plasma-Lyte 148, and Normosol-R, it provides sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, acetate, and gluconate in concentrations designed to approximate extracellular fluid. The solution expands the extracellular fluid compartment and restores water and electrolyte deficits; acetate and gluconate serve as bicarbonate precursors after metabolism. It is used for acute extracellular fluid volume loss in settings such as surgery, trauma, burns, shock, and moderate blood loss, but does not replace blood products when hemorrhage or red-cell loss is severe.
