Overview

Sodium citrate + gentamicin is a compounded combination drug used primarily as a catheter lock solution to prevent and treat catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI), especially in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Sodium citrate acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions, thereby preventing blood clot formation within the catheter. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, providing broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. The combination is not commercially available as a pre-mixed product but is extemporaneously compounded in hospital pharmacies for clinical use. This mixture has demonstrated physical and chemical stability for extended periods at room temperature or body temperature when stored in catheters[2][3][5][6]. Its primary indication is the prevention of infection and maintenance of patency in central venous catheters.
