Overview

This combination therapy consists of sodium deoxycholate (marketed as Kybella), triamcinolone acetonide, and lidocaine, and is specifically being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial led by investigators Goldman, Butterwick, Fitzpatrick, and Groff. Sodium deoxycholate is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring bile acid that acts as an adipolytic agent, causing focal adipocytolysis by disrupting fat cell membranes when injected into subcutaneous fat. Triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid, is added to the formulation to mitigate treatment-associated side effects such as pain and edema (swelling). Lidocaine is included as a local anesthetic to further manage procedural pain. The primary indication for this combination is the reduction of moderate to severe submental fat, commonly referred to as a double chin.
