Overview

This represents two separate iron replacement products used to treat iron deficiency anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease receiving hemodialysis. **Sodium ferric gluconate complex** is a stable macromolecular complex with an apparent molecular weight of 289,000-440,000 daltons. It contains elemental iron as the sodium salt of a ferric ion carbohydrate complex in an alkaline aqueous solution with approximately 20% sucrose. It works by replenishing iron stores so the body can make more red blood cells. **Iron sucrose** is a dark brown liquid solution administered intravenously when oral iron options cannot be used. It has ~20 mg of iron per mL of solution. After administration, it is transferred to ferritin, broken down in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, and then either stored or taken up by plasma for transfer to hemoglobin. Both medications are used primarily in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis who are receiving supplemental epoetin therapy.
