Overview
Sodium fluoride + tricalcium phosphate is a combination used primarily in prescription-strength toothpastes and varnishes for the prevention and control of dental caries (tooth decay) and to promote remineralization of enamel. Sodium fluoride acts by enhancing the uptake of fluoride ions into tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid demineralization. Functionalized tricalcium phosphate (fTCP) is designed to deliver bioavailable calcium and phosphate ions while preventing premature interaction with fluoride; this enhances the nucleation activity for remineralization at the tooth surface[2][6][8]. The combination is indicated especially for patients at high risk for caries or orthodontic decalcification[1][6]. It is typically self-applied as a dentifrice or varnish under professional supervision.
