This experimental toothpaste, developed by Colgate-Palmolive, is a zinc-based oral care formulation designed to reduce established dental plaque and gingivitis. It contains 1450 ppm sodium fluoride combined with a zinc-based antimicrobial system (typically involving zinc oxide and/or zinc citrate). The formulation was developed as a non-triclosan alternative to traditional antimicrobial toothpastes. Zinc ions provide broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by inhibiting bacterial metabolism, disrupting cell membranes, and preventing bacterial adhesion to the tooth surface, which reduces the formation of plaque biofilms and subsequent gingival inflammation. Sodium fluoride is included to promote enamel remineralization and provide anti-caries protection. The efficacy of this formulation has been evaluated in six-month, double-blind, controlled clinical trials comparing it to triclosan-based and standard fluoride toothpastes.
