sodium gluconate + potassium chloride + sodium acetate + magnesium chloride + sodium chloride

A sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic **multiple-electrolyte intravenous solution** containing sodium gluconate, potassium chloride, sodium acetate, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride, marketed most commonly as **Plasma-Lyte A** and **Plasma-Lyte 148**. It is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration, for correction of dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, and as an alkalinizing agent. Its pharmacologic effect is replacement of extracellular fluid electrolytes together with support of **acid-base homeostasis**; acetate and gluconate are metabolized to bicarbonate precursors and thereby help buffer metabolic acidosis. This product is an approved pharmaceutical combination of inorganic salts rather than a biologic, oncology asset, or antimicrobial drug. A related electrolyte irrigating solution exists, but the injectable drug of interest here is the balanced IV crystalloid formulation.
