Sodium gluconate + sodium acetate + potassium chloride + magnesium chloride + sodium chloride is a sterile, isotonic balanced multi-electrolyte solution used as an intravenous fluid replacement product and, in certain formulations, as a physiological irrigating solution. Marketed under brands including Plasma-Lyte 148, Plasma-Lyte A, and Physiolyte, it has been developed and commercialized by companies such as Baxter and B. Braun. The solution replenishes extracellular water and key electrolytes including sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride; acetate and gluconate function as metabolizable anions that act as alkalinizing agents by being converted to bicarbonate equivalents, helping correct or prevent metabolic acidosis associated with dehydration and electrolyte loss. Clinically, injection formulations are indicated in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water and electrolytes for hydration and correction of electrolyte imbalance and as an alkalinizing agent, while irrigant formulations are used for general irrigation, rinsing, and washing and are not for injection.
