This is a combination therapy consisting of two distinct classes of antihyperglycemic agents used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors act by blocking glucose reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and reductions in blood glucose, body weight, and blood pressure. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists mimic endogenous GLP-1 to enhance insulin secretion, suppress glucagon release, slow gastric emptying, and promote satiety. When used together, these agents provide additive benefits for glycemic control and weight loss without increasing severe hypoglycemia risk. Clinical studies show that this combination reduces major adverse cardiovascular events and serious renal outcomes more effectively than either class alone[1][4][2]. The combination also offers cardioprotective and renoprotective effects beyond glycemic control[8][6].
