Overview

This is a combination ophthalmic formulation containing sodium hyaluronate, carbomer, and triglyceride (often medium-chain triglycerides). Sodium hyaluronate is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan with viscoelastic and hygroscopic properties, used for its ability to retain water and promote wound healing on the ocular surface. Carbomer is a synthetic high-molecular-weight polymer that increases viscosity and prolongs retention time of the formulation on mucosal surfaces. Triglycerides (typically medium-chain) act as lipid components to enhance tear film stability by supplementing the lipid layer, reducing evaporation of tears. This combination is primarily indicated for dry eye disease (DED), providing lubrication, hydration, and protection to the ocular surface by mimicking natural tears and improving tear film stability[1][3][5]. The mechanism of action involves physical lubrication, mucoadhesion to prolong contact time with the ocular surface or mucosa, water retention via sodium hyaluronate’s hydrophilic nature, and reduction in tear evaporation due to the lipid component.
