Overview

Sodium hyaluronate + polyethylene glycol is a combination drug used primarily as an ophthalmic lubricant for the treatment of dry eye syndrome and related ocular surface disorders. Sodium hyaluronate, a salt form of hyaluronic acid, forms a viscoelastic film over the cornea and conjunctiva, providing prolonged lubrication and protection against environmental irritants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), particularly PEG 400 in ophthalmic formulations, acts as a wetting agent that spreads evenly across the ocular surface to maintain hydration and reduce friction during blinking. The combination addresses multiple aspects of tear film deficiency by enhancing moisture retention, reducing evaporation, and improving comfort for patients with dry eyes[6][4]. This combination may also be explored for use as an oral or rectal laxative in certain formulations due to synergistic effects on mucosal surfaces[5].
