Overview

Sodium hypochlorite + ethanol is a combination of two chemical agents commonly used for disinfection and antisepsis. Sodium hypochlorite acts as a strong oxidizing agent, disrupting microbial cell walls and inactivating bacteria, viruses, and fungi through oxidation reactions[1][6]. Ethanol is an alcohol that denatures proteins and dissolves lipid membranes, providing rapid antimicrobial action. When combined (often referred to as "alcoholic bleach"), the mixture can exhibit enhanced biocidal activity compared to either agent alone, reducing required contact time for effective disinfection[10]. However, this combination is not typically formulated or marketed as a pharmaceutical drug but may be used in laboratory or industrial settings for surface disinfection. The mechanism of action involves both oxidative damage (from sodium hypochlorite) and protein/lipid denaturation (from ethanol). Caution must be exercised when mixing these chemicals due to potential chemical reactivity.
