Overview

Sodium hypochlorite + hypochlorous acid (NaOCl/HOCl) is an investigational antiseptic solution being evaluated for intraoperative peritoneal lavage. Developed by Universitätsmedizin Mannheim, it is currently being studied in the PREVENAT pilot randomized controlled trial to prevent intraabdominal abscesses following laparotomy for acute peritonitis. The solution exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity through oxidative mechanisms that target bacterial cell components, including proteins and DNA. Preclinical studies have demonstrated high efficacy and a favorable safety profile compared to standard saline lavage, showing improved survival in peritonitis models.
