The solution contains dextrose monohydrate as the principal osmotic agent plus sodium chloride, sodium lactate, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride in water for injection; it is supplied in multiple formulations with differing dextrose strengths and electrolyte compositions, including standard and low magnesium/low calcium variants. Its therapeutic effect is not receptor-mediated; rather, it works by creating an osmotic gradient across the peritoneal membrane to promote ultrafiltration, while diffusion between blood and dialysate facilitates removal of uremic solutes and helps correct fluid and electrolyte abnormalities. Public labeling identifies initial U.S. approval for DELFLEX in 1984, with later approved configurations including attached exchange-set presentations.
