A sterile intravenous crystalloid combination product containing sodium lactate, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, dextrose monohydrate, and sodium chloride. It is used as a parenteral source of water, electrolytes, and carbohydrate calories, and as an alkalinizing agent for replacement of extracellular fluid and electrolyte losses in adults and pediatric patients. The pharmacologic effect is not mediated by a single molecular target; rather, the formulation expands the extracellular fluid compartment, replenishes sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride, provides dextrose for caloric support and blood glucose restoration, and uses lactate as a bicarbonate precursor to help correct or mitigate mild metabolic acidosis. This is an approved prescription hospital infusion product marketed in formulations such as Lactated Ringer's and 5% Dextrose Injection and associated with ICU Medical and Hospira.
