sodium nitrite + citric acid

This topical nitric oxide treatment, developed by researchers at the University of Aberdeen, is a combination therapy for anogenital warts. It consists of two separate creams containing sodium nitrite (up to 6%) and citric acid (up to 9%) that, when co-applied, react to produce nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide acts as the active agent with antiviral and antimicrobial properties. A Phase 2 clinical trial demonstrated that a high-dose regimen (6% sodium nitrite and 9% citric acid applied twice daily) achieved a 31% complete clearance rate of warts at 12 weeks. The development was supported by ProStrakan and Origin Pharmaceuticals.
