Overview

This is a combination drug consisting of three active pharmaceutical ingredients: - **Sodium phosphate** is an inorganic salt used as a laxative and electrolyte replenisher. It works by increasing fluid in the small intestine, stimulating bowel movements through osmotic action, and providing essential phosphate ions for biochemical functions[6][9]. - **Rifaximin** is a non-systemic, broad-spectrum oral antibiotic derived from rifamycin. It acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract to inhibit bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Rifaximin is primarily used for hepatic encephalopathy, traveler's diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea[3][8]. - **Polyethylene glycol (PEG)** is an osmotic laxative that binds water in the intestinal lumen, increasing stool water content and promoting bowel evacuation. PEG has negligible intestinal absorption and minimal toxicity; it is widely used for constipation relief and as part of colonoscopy preparation regimens[5][7][10]. The combination of these agents would provide both antimicrobial activity (rifaximin) and potent bowel cleansing/laxative effects (sodium phosphate and polyethylene glycol), potentially useful for indications requiring both gut decontamination and rapid gastrointestinal transit.
