Overview
Sodium picosulfate + magnesium oxide + citric acid is a low-volume, dual-action bowel preparation kit indicated for cleansing of the colon as a preparation for colonoscopy in adults and pediatric patients. The product contains sodium picosulfate, a prodrug that is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to form the active metabolite bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), which directly stimulates the colonic mucosa to increase peristalsis. The other components, magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid, react in water to form magnesium citrate, an osmotic laxative that promotes water retention in the intestinal lumen. This combination effectively clears the bowel with a lower fluid volume requirement compared to traditional polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions, often leading to improved patient compliance and tolerability. It is marketed under various brand names including Clenpiq (a ready-to-drink formulation) and Prepopik.
