Overview
BM-R14 is a combination bowel-cleansing agent developed by Bainei Pharmaceutical (Beimei Pharma) for use in patients requiring colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other diagnostic procedures. The formulation contains sodium picosulfate, a stimulant laxative prodrug, along with magnesium oxide and citric acid, which react in water to form osmotic magnesium citrate. Sodium picosulfate is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria into its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), which acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate peristalsis. Magnesium citrate increases the osmotic pressure within the intestinal lumen, promoting water retention and stool softening. BM-R14 is being developed as a generic or improved formulation and is currently in Phase 1 clinical testing (pilot study) with a bioequivalence (BE) waiver status.
