Overview
Sodium thiosulfate + hyaluronate is an investigational otoprotective formulation developed by The Netherlands Cancer Institute to prevent cisplatin-induced hearing loss (ototoxicity) in patients with head and neck cancer. Administered via transtympanic injection into the middle ear, the formulation uses a hyaluronate gel (such as Healon or Biolevox HA) as a carrier to provide sustained contact with the round window membrane. Sodium thiosulfate acts as a small molecule antioxidant that neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) and binds to residual cisplatin in the cochlea, thereby protecting hair cells from damage without interfering with the systemic antitumor efficacy of the chemotherapy. It is currently being evaluated in the Phase III SOUND Trial.
