Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium valproate + valproic acid (Jiangsu Anbison Pharmaceutical) is a small molecule sustained-release oral formulation developed for the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. The medication consists of a combination of sodium valproate and its conjugate acid, valproic acid, which together act as a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. Its mechanism of action is multi-faceted, involving the enhancement of GABAergic neurotransmission through the inhibition of 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA transaminase) and succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase, as well as the modulation of neuronal excitability via the blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels. Additionally, valproate is known to act as a histone deacetylase inhibitor, which may contribute to its long-term effects in mood stabilization. Jiangsu Anbison Pharmaceutical has filed an NDA/BLA for this formulation in China, aiming to provide a sustained-release option that maintains stable therapeutic plasma levels and reduces dosing frequency.
