Catvira is a patented fixed-dose combination (FDC) tablet developed by the Egyptian Liver Hospital for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 infection. The combination consists of three active ingredients: sofosbuvir (400 mg), a nucleotide analog inhibitor of the HCV NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase; ribavirin (1000 mg), a broad-spectrum antiviral; and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) (400 mg), a natural polyphenol derived from green tea. EGCG is incorporated into the formulation to act as an HCV entry inhibitor and to provide anti-hemolytic protection, which is intended to mitigate the hemolytic anemia frequently associated with ribavirin therapy. Clinical data from Phase 2/3 trials in Egypt indicate that Catvira achieves high sustained virologic response (SVR12) rates and a rapid decline in viral load in both treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced adult patients, while potentially improving the safety and tolerability profile of the regimen.
