Overview
SOLX is a proprietary red blood cell (RBC) additive solution developed by Haemonetics Corporation, specifically designed for use with the LeukoSep Leukocyte Reduction Filtration System. It serves as a preservative medium that extends the shelf life of red blood cells to 42 days by providing essential metabolic substrates and maintaining physiological conditions during refrigerated storage. The solution typically contains a combination of nutrients and buffers, such as adenine, dextrose, and phosphate, which help maintain cellular ATP levels and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentrations, thereby preserving the oxygen-carrying capacity and viability of the RBCs for transfusion. SOLX is used following the collection of whole blood in an anticoagulant like CPD (Citrate Phosphate Dextrose) and is intended for patients requiring blood transfusions due to anemia or acute blood loss.
