Overview

SOLX (also designated as AS-7) is a red blood cell additive solution developed by Haemonetics Corporation (following its acquisition of Hemerus Medical LLC) in collaboration with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the University of Cincinnati. It is a key component of the SOLX System (LEUKOSEP HWB-600-XL), which is used for the collection and processing of whole blood into leukocyte-reduced red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma. SOLX is specifically formulated to preserve the quality of red blood cells during storage for up to 42 days by minimizing storage lesions and maintaining essential metabolic levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG). Although it is regulated as a drug by the FDA (approved in 2013), it does not treat anemia or blood loss directly; rather, it ensures the viability and efficacy of blood products used in transfusion therapy for these conditions.
