Somatropin + gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist is a combination therapy being investigated by the Rabin Medical Center for the treatment of boys born small for gestational age (SGA). The combination consists of recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin, specifically Norditropin) and a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. Somatropin promotes linear growth by acting as an agonist at the growth hormone receptor, while the GnRH agonist is used to suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis by downregulating GnRH receptors. This suppression delays the onset or progression of puberty, preventing the premature fusion of epiphyseal plates caused by sex steroids. By extending the duration of the growth period, the combination therapy aims to improve the final adult height of children with SGA-related growth failure compared to growth hormone treatment alone.
