Overview
Somatropin + pegvisomant is a combination of two drugs with opposing actions on the growth hormone axis. Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone, used to treat conditions of growth hormone deficiency by stimulating tissue growth and metabolism. Pegvisomant is a genetically engineered analog of human growth hormone that acts as a highly selective antagonist at the growth hormone receptor, blocking endogenous GH action and reducing production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Pegvisomant is primarily indicated for acromegaly in patients who cannot be treated successfully with surgery or radiation[1][2][4]. The combination would theoretically pair an agonist and an antagonist at the same receptor system; however, there are no approved indications or clinical uses for this specific drug combination.
