This combination therapy, investigated by the University of Rochester, consists of recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin, administered as Genotropin) and testosterone enanthate. It is designed to treat facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) by leveraging the synergistic effects of growth hormone and androgen receptor signaling. Somatropin acts as an agonist at the growth hormone receptor to stimulate protein synthesis and muscle growth, while testosterone enanthate targets the androgen receptor to further enhance lean body mass and muscle strength. The therapy was evaluated in the Phase 1 STARFiSH (Study of Testosterone and rHGH in FSHD) trial, which focused on safety, tolerability, and proof-of-concept efficacy in adult men with genetically confirmed FSHD.
