SonoCloud-9 + carboplatin is a drug-device combination therapy developed by Carthera for the treatment of recurrent glioblastoma. The SonoCloud-9 component is an implantable ultrasound device that, when activated in the presence of systemic microbubbles, uses low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPU) to temporarily and reversibly open the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This transient disruption of the BBB allows for significantly increased penetration of intravenously administered carboplatin into the brain parenchyma. Carboplatin is a cytotoxic platinum-based agent that induces DNA cross-linking, leading to apoptosis in rapidly dividing tumor cells. By overcoming the delivery barrier posed by the BBB, this combination aims to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy in brain tumors where drug access is typically limited.
