Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sorbitol + mannitol is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, hypotonic irrigation solution composed of two sugar alcohols (hexitols). It is specifically indicated for use as a urologic irrigating fluid during transurethral prostatic resection (TURP) and other transurethral surgical procedures. The solution is nonconductive, which is critical for safety during electrosurgery, and its solute concentration (typically 2.7% sorbitol and 0.54% mannitol) provides sufficient osmolarity to minimize the risk of intravascular hemolysis should the fluid be absorbed through open veins. When absorbed systemically, both components act as osmotic diuretics, facilitating their excretion.
