Sorbitol + phenylephrine is a combination of two agents commonly found in over-the-counter and prescription medications for symptomatic relief of nasal congestion and related upper respiratory symptoms. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol (polyol) used primarily as a sweetener, humectant, or laxative in pharmaceutical formulations[4][5]. Phenylephrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist that acts as a decongestant by causing vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, thereby reducing swelling and congestion[1][2][6]. The combination may be present in oral liquid preparations where sorbitol serves as an excipient to improve taste or texture while phenylephrine provides therapeutic action against nasal congestion. Phenylephrine’s mechanism involves selective stimulation of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors leading to vasoconstriction; it can also increase blood pressure when administered systemically[1]. Sorbitol itself does not have direct pharmacological activity on the respiratory tract but may contribute to gastrointestinal effects if consumed in significant quantities.
