Overview
Médialipide is a sterile lipid emulsion for intravenous infusion, primarily used as a source of calories and essential fatty acids in parenteral nutrition. It is composed of a 1:1 mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and long-chain triglycerides (LCT) derived from soybean oil. This formulation is designed to balance the rapid energy availability of MCTs with the essential fatty acid supply of LCTs. While widely used as a standard lipid source, Médialipide has been associated with parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD), including cholestasis and hepatotoxicity, particularly during long-term use in pediatric and neonatal populations. It is frequently used as a comparator in clinical trials evaluating newer-generation lipid emulsions, such as SMOFlipid, which incorporate additional lipid sources like fish oil and olive oil to mitigate hepatotoxicity.
