Intralipid is a sterile, non-pyrogenic lipid injectable emulsion used for intravenous administration as a source of calories and essential fatty acids. It is composed of soybean oil, egg yolk phospholipids (as an emulsifier), and glycerin (to adjust tonicity). The soybean oil component is a mixture of mainly polyunsaturated long-chain triglycerides, providing essential fatty acids such as linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid. Intralipid is primarily indicated for adult and pediatric patients requiring parenteral nutrition when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient, or contraindicated. It is also used to prevent or treat essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD). The emulsion is designed to mimic the structure and metabolic clearance of endogenous chylomicrons, being cleared from the bloodstream by the enzyme lipoprotein lipase. It was originally developed by Fresenius Kabi and is widely distributed by Baxter Healthcare.
