Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Spectinomycin + lincomycin is a fixed-dose combination of two antibiotics used exclusively in veterinary medicine. Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, primarily acting against certain aerobic gram-negative bacteria and Mycoplasma species. Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that also inhibits protein synthesis but binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit; it is mainly active against gram-positive bacteria and some anaerobic gram-negative bacteria as well as Mycoplasma species. The combination provides additive or sometimes synergistic antibacterial effects and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of respiratory tract infections (such as chronic respiratory disease in poultry), swine dysentery caused by Serpulina (Treponema) hyodysenteriae, proliferative enteropathy due to Lawsonia intracellularis in pigs, foot rot in sheep caused by Bacteroides nodosus, and other susceptible infections in livestock[1][3][4][5][7]. It is administered orally via drinking water or feed premix for pigs and poultry or by injection for other animals.
