Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Spikevax (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) 2024-2025 Formula is an updated mRNA-based monovalent vaccine developed by Moderna in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). This formulation specifically targets the KP.2 strain, a variant of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron JN.1 lineage. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver messenger RNA (mRNA) that encodes the spike glycoprotein of the KP.2 variant. Upon intramuscular administration, the mRNA directs host cells to express the spike protein, which subsequently induces a robust immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity. This updated version was approved by the FDA in August 2024 to provide enhanced protection against circulating variants for the 2024-2025 respiratory virus season.
