Overview

This is a combination of two vaccines used for the prevention of poliomyelitis (polio): - **Split-virion inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV)** is an injectable, highly purified preparation containing three types of wild or Sabin strain polioviruses that have been grown in cell culture and then chemically inactivated. It induces strong systemic immunity by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies against all three serotypes (types 1, 2, and 3) but provides limited mucosal immunity[4][5][8]. - **Trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV)** is a live attenuated virus preparation administered orally. It contains weakened forms of all three serotypes and induces both humoral and mucosal immunity. OPV can indirectly immunize others through viral shedding but carries a rare risk of reversion to neurovirulence[4][5]. The combination approach has historically been used to maximize both systemic protection (from IPV) and intestinal/mucosal protection (from OPV), especially during transition periods or catch-up campaigns. However, following the global "OPV switch" in April 2016 due to risks associated with type 2 cVDPV emergence from tOPV use, most countries now use bivalent OPVs or IPV-only schedules[4][9].
