Overview

SRP + atorvastatin is a combination therapy where atorvastatin (1.2%) is delivered subgingivally as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. The search results indicate that this combination has been studied for treating intrabony defects (IBDs) in periodontal disease, with atorvastatin being used as a locally delivered adjunct to the standard SRP procedure. Atorvastatin is primarily known as a lipid-lowering medication that inhibits 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. However, it also demonstrates pleiotropic effects including anti-inflammatory properties and bone stimulation capabilities, which make it beneficial in periodontal treatment[4]. When used in this dental application, atorvastatin is typically formulated as a 1.2% gel that is applied locally to the periodontal defect after SRP is performed.
