Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SSP+ Platelet Additive Solution (also known as SSP+ or PAS-E) is a sterile, isotonic crystalloid solution developed by Macopharma. It is designed to partially replace plasma (typically up to 80% SSP+ / 20% plasma) in the preparation and storage of buffy-coat derived or apheresis platelet concentrates. SSP+ contains key electrolytes and buffering agents, including sodium chloride, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium phosphate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride. Acetate serves as a metabolic substrate for platelets to reduce lactate production and maintain stable pH, while phosphate provides buffering capacity, and magnesium and potassium help reduce platelet activation. The solution improves the storage quality, stability, and shelf life of platelet concentrates (up to 7 to 9 days) at 22°C under continuous agitation, while reducing the risk of plasma-associated transfusion reactions such as allergic reactions and transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI).
