St. John's wort oil (Hypericum perforatum oil) is a natural herbal product being investigated for its therapeutic potential in managing postoperative complications following oral surgery. In a clinical research program led by Yuzuncu Yil University, the oil was evaluated as a mouthwash for patients undergoing the surgical extraction of impacted third molars. The oil is believed to possess significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties, which are likely mediated by active constituents such as hypericin and hyperforin. A Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT04373421) demonstrated that St. John's wort oil mouthwash was as effective as standard chemical treatments, such as chlorhexidine gluconate plus benzydamine hydrochloride, in reducing postoperative pain, facial swelling (edema), and trismus (limited jaw opening) without causing adverse effects.
