Overview
This combination approach involves adding dexmedetomidine to standard-of-care sedation protocols. Dexmedetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist that provides sedation without significant respiratory depression. When added to standard sedation protocols (which may include benzodiazepines, propofol, or opioids), dexmedetomidine can reduce the need for other sedatives, potentially decreasing time to extubation, reducing delirium incidence, and improving outcomes in ICU patients.
