Stannous fluoride + sodium monofluorophosphate is a combination of two inorganic compounds used primarily in over-the-counter dental products such as toothpastes and oral rinses for the prevention of dental caries (cavities), gingivitis, and to promote enamel remineralization. Stannous fluoride (SnF2) acts by promoting enamel mineralization and providing broad-spectrum antibacterial effects that reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding. Sodium monofluorophosphate (Na2PO3F) serves as a source of bioavailable fluoride ions through hydrolysis in the oral cavity; these ions help protect tooth enamel from acid attack by cariogenic bacteria. The combination leverages both agents' abilities to inhibit bacterial growth (notably Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli), enhance remineralization, reduce hypersensitivity, neutralize mouth pH after eating or drinking—especially beneficial for patients with xerostomia—and prevent periodontal infections. Both ingredients are FDA-approved for use in anticaries products[1][2][3][5][6].
