Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Stannous fluoride + zinc citrate** is an oral care combination most commonly used in dentifrices (toothpastes) to provide broad-spectrum oral health benefits. Stannous fluoride acts as a fluoride source with antimicrobial, anti-caries, anti-gingivitis, anti-hypersensitivity, and anti-erosive properties, while zinc citrate serves as an anti-calculus (anti-tartar) agent and additional stabilizing ingredient. The combination reduces oral bacterial biofilm, inhibits plaque formation, prevents caries, reduces gingivitis and oral malodor, and inhibits calculus formation via dual mechanisms: stannous fluoride disrupts bacterial metabolism and forms a protective mineral barrier on tooth surfaces, while zinc citrate interferes with crystal formation in dental calculus by substituting for calcium in the calcium phosphate lattice and provides additional antimicrobial activity[1][2][3][5][7]. This combination is found in several modern, stabilized toothpaste formulations, including some marketed for sensitive teeth and gum health.
