Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a stannous fluoride-based dentifrice formulation stabilized with zinc phosphate, developed by Colgate-Palmolive for the treatment of gingival inflammation and the maintenance of oral health. The active ingredient, stannous fluoride (SnF2), serves as a small molecule antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of plaque-forming bacteria and reduces the overall bacterial load in the oral cavity. The inclusion of zinc phosphate is a key technological advancement that stabilizes the stannous ions, preventing their oxidation and ensuring high bioavailability for therapeutic effect. Clinically, this formulation has been shown to reduce bleeding on probing and gingival index scores. It works by modulating local inflammatory responses, specifically reducing levels of matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8) and RANKL in the gingival crevicular fluid, and promoting a more balanced oral microbiome. It is primarily indicated for gingivitis and is marketed under the Colgate Total brand.
