Staphylokinase is a recombinant protein, specifically a profibrinolytic agent originally derived from *Staphylococcus aureus*. The version developed by ARTES Biotechnology is produced using a yeast-based expression system. Staphylokinase acts as a potent thrombolytic by forming a 1:1 stoichiometric complex with plasminogen. This complex then activates other plasminogen molecules, converting them into plasmin, which degrades fibrin clots. Unlike first-generation thrombolytics like streptokinase, staphylokinase exhibits high fibrin specificity; it preferentially activates plasminogen at the surface of a fibrin clot rather than in the systemic circulation, which may reduce the risk of systemic fibrinogen depletion and associated bleeding complications. It is intended for intravenous administration in the treatment of acute thromboembolic conditions, including myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke.
