Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sterofundin is a balanced crystalloid solution used for fluid resuscitation and volume replacement in critically ill patients. In the context of the VISEP trial (Efficacy of Volume Substitution and Insulin Therapy in Severe Sepsis) conducted by the SepNet - Critical Care Trials Group, it was utilized as the crystalloid control arm for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. The solution contains a balanced mix of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, along with lactate (45 mmol/L) which serves as a buffering agent to prevent or correct metabolic acidosis. Unlike hydroxyethyl starch (HES), Sterofundin does not carry the same risks of renal impairment or coagulopathy in septic patients.
