The combination of stimulants and Lovaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) is an adjunctive therapeutic approach investigated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Stimulants, such as methylphenidate or amphetamine derivatives, are the standard-of-care pharmacological treatment for ADHD, acting primarily by increasing synaptic concentrations of dopamine and norepinephrine. Lovaza is an FDA-approved prescription omega-3 fatty acid concentrate containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters. In this combination, Lovaza is used as a supplement to potentially enhance the efficacy of stimulants or address residual symptoms by modulating neuronal membrane fluidity, signal transduction, and neuroinflammatory pathways. A clinical trial led by Antonios Likourezos at Maimonides Medical Center specifically evaluated this combination in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled setting to determine its impact on behavioral and cognitive outcomes in pediatric ADHD patients.
