Overview

Sucralfate + tranexamic acid is an investigational combination therapy being developed by National Cheng-Kung University Hospital for the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding, particularly in patients with gastrointestinal tumors. This combination is applied topically as a powder during endoscopy. Tranexamic acid acts as an antifibrinolytic by binding to plasminogen and preventing its conversion to plasmin, thereby stabilizing blood clots and reducing rebleeding. Sucralfate, a complex of aluminum hydroxide and sucrose octasulfate, adheres to the proteins in the wound base (such as albumin and fibrinogen) to create a protective physical barrier against gastric acid and enzymes. The dual action aims to achieve immediate hemostasis and reduce the high recurrence rates associated with fragile tumor-related mucosal bleeding by combining clot stabilization with mucosal protection.
