Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sucrose + povidone iodine (also known as sucrose/povidone-iodine or SPI, marketed under the brand name U-PASTA) is an approved topical combination therapy developed by Kowa for the treatment of pressure ulcers (bedsores) and skin ulcers (such as burn ulcers and diabetic ulcers). The formulation typically consists of 70% purified sucrose (white sugar) and 3% povidone iodine. Sucrose acts as an osmotic agent that reduces localized edema, absorbs wound exudate, and stimulates granulation tissue formation and epidermal regeneration. Povidone iodine serves as a broad-spectrum antiseptic that slowly releases free iodine to exert bactericidal activity against a wide range of pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), thereby preventing and treating wound infections. The ointment is applied topically to the cleaned wound surface.
